About this series

Bathing in naturally warm water is one of the oldest forms of travel pleasure. People have gathered at hot springs for health, relaxation and social life for thousands of years. This series follows that tradition across six very different landscapes.

Some places are natural wonders first and bathing sites second, such as the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale. Others are carefully developed spas, like the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, where geothermal water meets modern design. In Beppu, steam rises from the town itself, while in Ecuador, Italy and Bali the pools sit among mountains, hills or tropical gardens.

Each site has its own rules. Some ask you to shower before entering, some require swimwear and others do not allow it, and many limit where you can walk. Mineral water can be very hot or strongly scented, so take it slowly and stay hydrated. Most importantly, these environments are delicate. Respect the barriers and leave nothing behind.
